Sure, the Americans hold the pickup trophy, but that could be about to change with the latest introduction of a heavy-duty rig that could just take the segment by storm: the 2016 Nissan Titan XD. Is this latest workhorse from the Japanese automaker the ideal blend of heavy-duty functionality with light-duty features? It just might be.
The brand new 2016 Nissan Titan XD is built to do some seriously heavy work, with a few tricks up its plaid sleeves. If it’s a work truck you’re in the market for, but you’re also looking for something a bit more refined, as well as a truck that won’t cost you a fortune at the pumps, then the Titan XD might just be the answer.
Straight off the bat it’s clear to see Nissan was channeling everything manly and tough when they designed the exterior of the 2016 Titan XD. Everything is larger than life on this pickup, including the huge chrome front grille, oversized headlights and even the raised beltline that gives the Titan a higher stance on the road. Of course, the actual length (20 feet) of the truck from nose to tail also lends to that sense of massiveness. The Titan XD’s Crew Cab and 6.5-ft configuration is also a good way to live large in this particular pickup.
And it’s not just large in size and presence on the road, it’s also large in capabilities. The 2016 Nissan Titan XD, when properly equipped, has a maximum towing capacity of 12,000lbs and a max payload of 2,000lbs.
It’s able to pull of those workhorse performance numbers thanks to a powerful Cummins 5.0L V8 turbo diesel engine that offers up 310 horsepower and 555 lb-ft of torque. Power is handled via a 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission. The Titan XD can also be outfitted with a PRO-4X package that means all four wheels get to workin’ when you press the gas.
Inside the 2016 Nissan Titan XD you’ll find a cabin that’s aesthetically pleasing and functional, as well as being typically Nissan. Instead of cramming the XD with loads of high-tech gadgets and bits and bobs, Nissan instead chose to focus on the truck’s on-road capabilities and capacities instead. Real truck buyers don’t really care about Apple CarPlay and head-up displays, however, they do care about payload and towing, so that’s where the Nissan Titan XD really shines.
The 2016 Nissan Titan XD is taking on some bigwigs in the pickup truck segment, however, the Japanese automaker have proven they’re taking this very seriously.
